SlushAssist, concretely
This is the real novelty of the big models, and the XL’s number one argument against the FS301. On older machines, you set the thickness yourself depending on what you poured. SlushAssist does that work for you:
- It senses the resistance on the mixing auger and the tub temperature, then automatically adjusts the cold to aim for the right texture.
- It alerts you if the mix lacks sugar, before it goes wrong.
- In practice: ideal when someone else wants a refill without knowing the settings. You pour, you start, you forget about it.
You keep control if you want: the XL also offers 15 manual temperature settings, to push towards a finer drinking texture or a thicker spoonable one.
Sugar and alcohol: the rule that does everything
Like the whole range, the XL uses no ice: it cools just below 0 °C, and it is the sugar (or a substitute, or alcohol) that stops the ice block. Without antifreeze, it does not take.
To remember
- At least ~4 to 5 % sugar in the mix. Sodas, juices and syrups pass on their own; pure “zero” drinks do not. Substitute: allulose (about 1/2 tbsp per 200 ml) or 1 to 2 tbsp syrup/sugar per serving.
- Frozen Cocktail: drinks up to ~16 % alcohol.
- Frozen Cocktail Max: up to ~20 %, the XL’s asset for stronger cocktails. Above that, it no longer freezes.
- SlushAssist flags a lack of sugar; if it beeps, add syrup or sugar and restart.

In the kitchen with the XL (my take)
The real comfort of this format is not having to restart the machine between two services when there are many of you: you fill the tub, and there is enough to keep going. On my Max, I use Frozen Cocktail Max a lot for drinks parties; the XL does exactly the same in a slightly more reasonable volume, and with the same SlushAssist.
The only gap I feel coming from the FS301 is the Frappé: for an iced coffee, I go through the Milkshake and adjust the texture, it is fine but not quite the same result. If coffee frappés are your priority, keep that in mind.
XL FS601 or Max FS605?
This is the real hesitation, since both share the same programs (SlushAssist, Frozen Cocktail Max) and rapid cooling. What separates them:

In plain terms: the XL is plenty for a family and normal parties (sodas, milkshakes, classic margaritas).
