Ninja Slushi user guide: my complete guide to getting started

Discover the complete Ninja Slushi user guide: installation, sugar and alcohol management, programme selection and decoding alerts.

Mode d'emploi du Ninja Slushi : mon guide complet pour bien démarrer

To successfully make your drinks with this machine, forget everything you know about traditional blenders right away: the absolute rule is never put ice cubes in the vessel and to respect a minimum of 4% sugar, which acts as a true antifreeze. Without these two pillars, the ice does not set well and the system blocks. On the first day, I thought the motor was struggling, before understanding that my mixture was simply missing sugar. Here is my complete guide to installing your device, mastering its settings and decoding its alerts without risking damaging it.

Assembly and installation: preparing your Ninja Slushi

Installation requires a few simple but essential material precautions. First of all, if the box was laid on its side during transport or storage, you must imperatively wait 2 hours upright before switching on. This is a manufacturer requirement: without this rest, the device will display an alert.

Choose an open space: the machine needs at least 10 cm of free space around its ventilation grilles to expel heat, and it is better to avoid using it in a room where the temperature exceeds 38 °C.

To install the vessel correctly:

  • Lift the locking handle located on the side.
  • Gently slide the vessel onto the auger and the central evaporator (the metal cylinder).
  • Lower the handle to seal the vessel to the motor base.

A crucial technical point to remember: the seal located at the back of the evaporator is fixed. Do not try to remove or reposition it: the manufacturer states that it is fixed in place to avoid any leaks.

The golden rule: mastering sugar (the machine’s antifreeze)

This is the biggest difference compared to a blender. The compressor freezes the liquid in direct contact with the metal cylinder. Sugar is therefore mandatory because it lowers the freezing point. Without it, the ice hardens too quickly and blocks the auger.

The manual requires at least 4% sugar in all liquids (i.e., 4 g of sugar per 100 mL). Avoid artificial sweeteners: the manufacturer advises against it. Only allulose is cited as an alternative, with a drink that will seem sweeter.

If the mixture lacks sugar, the machine emits an alert (the temperature lights turn on one by one from top to bottom). You must then correct it. The right method is to add 15 to 30 mL of syrup or sugar per serving, but be careful: you must thoroughly mix this addition to your liquid base separately, before pouring it into the vessel. Never pour powder or pure syrup directly into the running vessel.

Frozen cocktails: the right alcohol dosage according to your model

Alcohol also acts as an antifreeze, but in a much more powerful way. An overdose will prevent your preparation from freezing. You do not dose a ready-to-drink beverage (like wine or cider) and homemade cocktails made with strong spirits in the same way.

Here are the reliable benchmarks for successful mixes (and consuming in moderation):

Type of drinkRecommended dosageRecommended programme
Spirits (35% and above)About 120 mL of strong alcohol per 710 mL of preparation (max 175 mL at 40% per litre)Frozen Cocktail
Ready-to-drink beverages (wine, beer)Between 2.8% and 16% alcoholFrozen Cocktail
Ready-to-drink beverages (large capacity)Up to 20% alcoholFrozen Cocktail Max (XL and Max models only)

If you have been a bit heavy-handed and the preparation remains stubbornly liquid, the correction is simple: you just need to dilute with about 60 mL of non-alcoholic base per serving to restore the freezing balance. For an example of dosage to replicate, take a look at my mango guava gin margarita.

Launching and choosing programmes

Before launching a cycle, ensure you have poured a minimum of 500 mL of liquid to the bottom of the vessel. This liquid must imperatively be cold (never lukewarm or hot), and I repeat: the vessel must contain no solid ingredients or ice cubes.

The three devices in the range share the classic programmes (Slush, Frozen Cocktail, Milkshake and Frozen Juice), but differ in their specialities:

  • The Ninja Slushi (FS301) is the only model equipped with the Frappé programme. If you own another device in the range, you can use the Milkshake mode by slightly adjusting your ratios to get closer to it.
  • The large capacity models, the Ninja Slushi XL (FS601) and the Ninja Slushi Max (FS605), benefit exclusively from the Frozen Cocktail Max (to handle a little more alcohol) and SlushAssist modes.

Depending on the total volume, the power of the model and the starting temperature of your liquid, allow between 15 and 60 minutes of waiting to obtain the final texture.

Decoding light and sound alerts

The device constantly communicates the status of your slush. No need to unplug it at the slightest ring, here is how to interpret the alerts (the complete decoder is in my troubleshooting guide, and that of the noises in my noise guide):

Signal emittedMeaning and solution
3 single beepsThe drink has reached the right texture, it is ready.
2 beeps/min + temperature lights going downThe preparation lacks sugar. Add 15 to 30 mL of syrup per serving, mixed separately before pouring.
2 beeps/min + temperature lights going upThe preparation contains too much alcohol and cannot freeze. Add non-alcoholic liquid.
All temperature lights flashingMotor block. Unplug, let rest for 15 min, and check that the auger is not stuck.
All programme lights flashingThe vessel is poorly installed. Lift the handle, push the vessel back and relock.
The 5 top lights and 5 bottom lights flash alternatelyThe device did not rest for 2 hours upright before use.

My starter memo

Before you start your first tests, here are the three practical golden rules that I always remind people of when I lend out my machine:

  1. Never put ice cubes or pieces of fruit in the vessel. The compressor takes care of all the cold.
  2. Always mix your syrups or sugar additions separately, before pouring them into the machine.
  3. If the sides of the machine are warm to the touch while it is running, it is perfectly normal: it is the compressor’s ventilation grilles doing their job.

Cleaning and daily maintenance

Maintenance is designed to be quick. The first instruction is to never leave ingredients in the vessel when turned off. As soon as you have finished serving, empty the vessel.

Then get into the habit of running the RINSE programme after each use. It will stir the water in the vessel without activating the cold, which loosens sugary residues and makes disassembly easier.

For washing, all removable parts are dishwasher safe in the bottom basket, on the sole condition of deactivating the heated drying option. Warning: the motor base and the central evaporator obviously never go in the dishwasher, a wipe with a damp cloth is enough. Finally, during manual cleaning, be sure to remove the pour spout cover and its seal to dry them thoroughly before reassembling everything.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put ice cubes in the Ninja Slushi?

No, absolutely not! The machine is equipped with its own compressor that freezes the liquid directly onto the evaporator. The manual prohibits ice cubes and any solid ingredients in the vessel.

What should I do if the machine beeps twice per minute?

This is a recipe alert. Look at the temperature lights: if they turn on one by one while going down, it is missing sugar. If they go up, there is too much alcohol. In both cases, the ice is not setting correctly.

Can I put Ninja Slushi parts in the dishwasher?

Yes, all removable parts are dishwasher safe (bottom basket, without heated drying cycle). Only the motor base with its evaporator must be cleaned by hand with a damp cloth.

How do I turn off the machine to serve the drink?

You must not turn it off! The device must remain on (and the auger spinning) to be able to dispense the slush through the pour spout.

You now have all the basics so you don’t make mistakes during your first attempts. With a very cold liquid and the right sugar ratio, the preparation is almost done by itself. What is the first drink you will test (or have tested) with your Ninja Slushi?
