Ninja Slushi compatibility
Program used: Slush (slushie)
The great fast-food classic recreated at home in just a few minutes, without the drive-thru wait. I tried it with Zero by habit: big mistake, it freezes solid. You absolutely need the sugar from the classic version. With the right soda, you get an ideal icy texture, perfect for sipping through a straw on a hot day. A touch of acidity to balance it out, and the machine works its magic for a deliciously refreshing result.

Ingredients
1 litre of classic Coca-Cola (a must, no Zero or Light)
1 tablespoon of lime juice (optional)
Instructions
- Open your bottle of Coca-Cola and let it decarbonate for a few minutes, or pour very slowly to avoid excessive foam. Classic Coke contains 10% sugar, which guarantees a real slush texture.
- Pour the soda into the Ninja Slushi vessel, making sure the final volume is positioned well between the min and max markings.
- Add the tablespoon of lime juice if you wish to balance the very sweet profile of the drink.
- Select the Slush programme, let the machine work quietly, and serve as soon as three beeps announce that the drink is ready.
Frozen Cuba Libre version
Add 120 ml of white rum to your litre of Coca-Cola (while respecting the alcohol limit) and launch the Frozen Cocktail programme.

View recipeThe golden rule of sugar for a successful soda
The crucial point with the Ninja Slushi, especially with commercial sodas, is to fully understand the role of sugar in the machine. As I often explain to my friends, sugar isn’t just there for the taste: it acts as a real natural antifreeze. Without it, your liquid will just harden due to the cold and form a huge solid block that will cause the machine to stall. That is exactly why it is impossible to make a proper frozen coke with a diet drink, a zero soda, or any sweetened liquid. The traditional cola found in supermarkets generally contains around 10 grams of carbohydrates per 100 millilitres. This rate is the perfect ratio for achieving a fluid drink that holds up well in a straw without jamming the motor. If, when tasting, you find the result a bit too syrupy, the trick is to add a nice touch of acidity with fresh lime, rather than trying to dilute the mixture with plain water, which would immediately break the consistency and the final texture.
Managing foam and mastering the pour
Highly carbonated drinks always require a little caution when filling the vessel, as they naturally tend to foam abundantly under the continuous action of the auger. To avoid unexpected overflows, I highly recommend that you pour the soda very slowly by tilting it against the edge of the wall, or better yet, let it degas for a good fifteen minutes on your kitchen counter before starting the device. Rest assured: even flat at the start, the liquid will take on a fantastic consistency thanks to the rotation. Once the right thickness is reached after about forty minutes, the ideal approach is to serve your guests immediately. You should know that such a soda tends to melt a little bit faster than a classic frozen smoothie or a denser dairy mixture. To keep this drink nice and cold in the glass for as long as possible, especially in summer, I often place my empty cups in the freezer for about ten minutes before the end of the cycle.
What if the lights start flashing?
If the machine beeps twice a minute, look at the temperature lights. Lit one by one from top to bottom, they indicate a lack of sugar: check that your cola is not a Zero or Light version. Lit from bottom to top, they signal too much alcohol, which can happen with the rum variant: respect the limit of 175 ml of strong alcohol per litre. All alerts are decoded in my troubleshooting guide.
Prefer the original version for the kids or with a splash of rum for happy hour?
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Coke Zero or Pepsi Max?
No. The manufacturer requires you to avoid artificial sweeteners and ensure there is at least 4% sugar: without it, the drink freezes into a solid block. Stick to the classic version.
Do I need to remove the gas from the cola before putting it in the vessel?
It is preferable. Leave the bottle open for a few minutes or pour very gently to prevent the foam from exceeding the maximum mark. The churning will eliminate most of the bubbles anyway.
How long does it take to get that fast-food texture?
Count on about 45 minutes with the Slush programme; the manufacturer states 15 to 60 minutes depending on the volume and the starting temperature.
Can I halve the quantities?
Yes, provided you stay above the 500 mL minimum required by the manufacturer (the Min mark on the vessel). Below that, it does not guarantee the consistency will set.
