Ninja Slushi compatibility
Program used: Frozen Cocktail (frozen cocktail)
The frozen margarita is the cocktail I pull out as soon as there are a few of us on the terrace. On my first try, I added too much tequila: since alcohol doesn’t freeze, the slush stayed stubbornly liquid. So I adjusted the proportions to find the balance between the bite of the agave, the acidity of the lime, and real cold-holding power. You get a well-set slush, perfect for a thick straw or straight from the glass.
Ninja Slushi Frozen Margarita

minutesA frozen margarita with a thick slushy texture, prepared without crushed ice thanks to the Frozen Cocktail program.
Ingredients
140 ml tequila (preferably blanco)
35 ml triple sec (like Cointreau or Grand Marnier)
140 ml freshly squeezed lime juice
90 ml agave syrup (or cane sugar syrup)
660 ml cold water
1 pinch of fine salt (in the mix)
Fine salt and lime wedges (for rimming the glasses)
Optional: 10 ml tequila per glass, added when serving
Instructions
- In a pitcher, mix the tequila, triple sec, lime juice, agave syrup, cold water and the pinch of salt until the salt dissolves. The water replaces classic crushed ice and brings the alcohol down to what the program accepts; the salt lifts the lime, which the cold tends to mute.
- Pour the mixture into the Ninja Slushi bowl, ensuring that the final level is between the MIN and MAX lines.
- Select the Frozen Cocktail program and let it run until you achieve a thick slushy texture.
- While the machine is running, run a lime wedge around half the rim of your glasses, then dip them into a small plate of fine salt. The salt on the glass enhances the aromas and contrasts with the lime’s acidity.
- Serve the slush immediately in the rimmed glasses. For a stronger margarita, pour 10 ml of tequila over each glass as you serve: the alcohol limit applies to what goes into the machine, not to the glass.

The big pitfall with frozen cocktails is the amount of alcohol, which acts as an antifreeze. The FS301 manual sets the limit at 175 ml of 40% ABV spirits for 1,065 ml of mixture, and this recipe sits right at it, tequila and triple sec combined. Within that budget, I gave most of the room to the tequila and cut back the triple sec, so it still comes through despite the dilution. Sugar also slows the freeze: with 90 ml of syrup, you stay well above the 4% sugar minimum Ninja asks for, without weighing the mix down. If you are looking for ideas for guests who do not drink alcohol, take a look at my Frozen virgin mojito with the Ninja Slushi, which is just as refreshing.
What to do if the margarita stays liquid or flashes?
The Ninja Slushi tells you what is wrong: watch which way the temperature lights move. If they light up one by one climbing from the bottom, with repeated double beeps, there is too much alcohol: add about 60 ml of cold water per serving, then press the Frozen Cocktail program twice to restart it. If they move down from the top, sugar is lacking: add 15 to 30 ml of syrup per serving, mixed with a little of the base before pouring it in. With the amounts in this recipe, sugar is not the problem, so do not add syrup to a margarita that stays liquid: it would slow the freeze even more. Without an alert, just be patient: chilling your liquids in the fridge before pouring them in speeds things up noticeably.
Are you more of a classic lime margarita person, or are you tempted by a fruit version?
Frequently asked questions
Why does my margarita stay liquid in the Slushi?
Most of the time, it is the alcohol: it lowers the freezing point, just like sugar does. If the temperature lights climb from the bottom, add about 60 ml of cold water per serving and restart the program, without adding more syrup.
Can I use bottled lime juice?
Technically yes, but I highly recommend freshly squeezed lime juice. The natural acidity and essential oils completely transform the flavor of the cocktail.
How long does it take for the frozen texture to be ready?
Expect about 45 minutes in the machine depending on your room temperature. To speed up the process, you can place your alcohol bottles and water in the refrigerator a few hours before.
