Chocolate Frappuccino in the Ninja Slushi

Ninja Slushi compatibility

Program used: Frappé (frappé)

No Frappé program on the XL and Max; use Milkshake (or Slush) and adjust the texture.

Forget the chore of ice cubes that dilute the flavor: the Slushi freezes your milk-coffee mixture directly for maximum intensity. Unlike a blender where I had to freeze my coffee into ice cubes to avoid watering it down, here the liquid freezes on its own. I spent years preparing frappés behind a counter, and the results with this machine always amaze me with its ultra-creamy side and intense freshness. You’ll see, with a thick straw or a spoon, it’s the perfect frosty snack for late afternoons.

A coffee and chocolate frappuccino in the Ninja Slushi, without ice cubes to preserve the full strength of the coffee.

Ingredients

  • 500 ml whole milk (or barista oat milk)

  • 250 ml chilled strong coffee (such as cold brew or long espresso)

  • 3 tablespoons chocolate spread (or chocolate sauce)

  • 2 tablespoons cane sugar syrup

  • Whipped cream and chocolate shavings (for serving)

Instructions

  • In a container, vigorously whisk the milk, cold coffee, spread, and syrup until the preparation is perfectly smooth. The fat from the spread and the sugar guarantee the creaminess of the frappé.
  • Pour the mixture into the Ninja Slushi bowl, making sure it is between the minimum and maximum lines.
  • Select the Frappé program and let the machine churn until a frozen texture is achieved, both creamy and thick enough to hold on a spoon.
  • Serve immediately in tall glasses, top with a generous dome of whipped cream, and sprinkle with a few chocolate shavings.

100% chocolate version (no coffee)

100% chocolate version (no coffee) : Replace the coffee with the same amount of milk and add a rounded tablespoon of bitter cocoa powder to balance the sugar.

The balance of sugar and fat for the perfect texture

If you’ve ever tried to freeze leftover black coffee, you know it results in a rock-hard block of ice. In the Ninja Slushi, the principle is the same: for the Frappé program to work and provide that straw-sippable texture, you need texture agents. Here, the sugar in the cane syrup acts as a natural antifreeze, preventing large crystals from forming. But the real secret to a successful frappuccino is the fat provided by the whole milk and the spread. This duo gives your frozen drink its elasticity. Back when I managed a counter, I often saw the mistake of using skim milk to lighten the recipe… The result was inevitably a flaky drink. So don’t be afraid of the cold measurement, freezing always dulls our perception of sweetness.

What if you don’t have the Frappé program?

The classic Ninja Slushi (the FS301) has a dedicated button for frappés, a real asset for this type of dairy drink. However, if you have the larger models (the XL or the Max), you won’t find this preset on the screen. Don’t worry, the recipe works just as well! The alternative I recommend is to start the Milkshake program, which handles dense dairy bases extremely well. Just keep an eye on the texture: as soon as the liquid takes on that velvety look characteristic of coffee shops, you can serve. If you feel it lacks a bit of firmness, you can always briefly switch to the Slush program at the end of the cycle to firm up the mixture.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my machine beeping and flashing red during the cycle?

This is often a sign that your mixture lacks sugar and is freezing too hard (an ice block is forming). Add a splash of cane syrup or milk directly into the bowl to soften the preparation and restart the churning.

Can I use regular almond milk instead of whole milk?

It is possible, but standard almond milk lacks enough fat, which will result in a texture closer to frozen water. Opt for a barista-style oat milk instead.

Should I put hot or cold coffee in the Ninja Slushi?

Always cold! You must let your coffee cool down or use a cold brew kept in the refrigerator. A lukewarm liquid will unnecessarily lengthen the machine’s freezing time.
