Cocoa and peanut butter protein milkshake

Discover how to make a cocoa and peanut butter protein milkshake in your Ninja Slushi. Perfect texture, without that gritty whey sensation.

Ninja Slushi compatibility

Program used: Milkshake (milkshake)

The advantage of preparing this mix in the Slushi rather than a classic shaker is getting that authentic, diner-style frozen churn that masks the sometimes chalky texture of whey. I had to adjust the maple syrup during my first tests: without added sugar, the whey made the milk set too hard. The result is deliciously fresh and indulgent, with that lovely roasted cocoa flavour. You get a treat that is ideal after the gym or for a refreshing snack.

The advantage of preparing this mix in the Slushi rather than a classic shaker is getting that authentic, diner-style frozen churn that masks the chalky texture of whey.

Ingredients

  • 850 ml milk (whole milk or plant-based drink like oat)

  • 90 g whey (protein powder, chocolate or vanilla flavour)

  • 60 g smooth peanut butter

  • 60 ml maple syrup (or agave syrup, essential for the cold texture)

Instructions

  • In a separate container, blend the milk, whey, peanut butter and syrup using an immersion blender or a shaker to dissolve all the powder. Pre-blending prevents protein lumps that could jam the auger.
  • Pour this smooth mixture into the vessel of the Ninja Slushi. The total volume is around one litre, which is perfect to sit between the min and max marks on the gauge.
  • Select the Milkshake programme, let the machine churn until you get a texture that is thick but drinkable through a straw, and serve in tall glasses.

Fruity version (Strawberry or Banana)

Replace the cocoa and peanut butter with 150 ml of pureed strawberry or banana, while keeping the vanilla whey and syrup for the right sweetness balance.

The importance of sugar and pre-mixing with whey

When preparing a post-workout snack, we often feel the urge to cut all sugar. That is a mistake with this machine. The key to the texture is keeping enough sugar to prevent the milk from freezing solid. Maple syrup isn’t just there for the taste, it acts as a natural antifreeze so your drink stays smooth and drinkable. I always add my syrup and blend everything well beforehand, because poorly dissolved powders can clump up on the auger and trigger an alert. If you are looking for post-workout alternatives, take a look at my recipe for 100% plant-based banana raspberry milkshake with Ninja Slushi, which uses the natural sweetness of fruit to balance things out. The principle remains the same: you need a binder so the texture holds the cold without freezing.

What to do if the mixture freezes or does not set?

Early on, I once heard my machine beep twice a minute with the temperature lights flashing one by one from top to bottom: this is caused by a lack of sugar. For this protein blend, a low-sugar plant milk increases the risk. Add 15 to 30 ml of syrup per serving, mixed separately with a little of the base before pouring, then restart the programme. All alerts are decoded in my troubleshooting guide. For those who prefer fruitier flavours while keeping a lovely creamy base, you can get inspired by the proportions of my Kiwi coconut milkshake with Ninja Slushi. Serve within 30 minutes of the end of the programme, then keep any leftovers in the fridge in a closed container, outside of the vessel: the manufacturer advises not to leave any ingredients inside when storing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove the maple syrup entirely to make a sugar-free milkshake?

It is strongly discouraged. Without added sugar, the milk and whey will freeze into a solid block, which risks jamming the machine. Sugar plays an essential role as an antifreeze and texturiser.

Should I use cold milk or milk at room temperature?

Ideally, use very cold milk straight from the fridge. This allows the machine to reach the right texture much faster and significantly limits the churning time.

Which Ninja Slushi model is compatible with this recipe?

All models (FS301, FS601 and FS605) feature the Milkshake programme, so they are all perfectly suitable. The volume of about one litre fits all vessels without exceeding the maximum mark.
